Singapore Start-up Diaries: 95% of the world’s problems are problems of communication.

Immediately after a 11D10N in Bali, Singapore last week was a flurry of activities. Everyone was in town for 1 or another of my various esoteric interests. It feels good to say that these interests are also work – though by the definition of Andy such work are really “hobbies” still because the payoff does not show up in our bank statements yet. Of the many things I’m learning out in the real world after…

Why history matters if you want to change the world

As an economics graduate, I am incredibly proud of the fact that no other lingo commands as much authority, if you will, in public discourse. At the end of the day, every conversation loops back to dollars and cents, carrots and sticks. And really we are at the forefront when it comes to measuring the immeasurable. Try us. So then it’s very interesting to me that many solutions proposed at platforms such as Responsible Business…

Singapore Start-up Diaries: The Old & the Young

A founder’s life is not unlike that of a maniac-depressive. You alternate between days of paranoia and euphoria. Today is an in-between, today is one of those days I feel like much remains to be done but we will press on. Do not go gentle into that good night, as they say. One curious thing I am seeing (correct me if I’m wrong) in Asia is that: there is too much capital sloshing around, but not…

Singapore Start-up Diaries: This will be the toughest time of our lives.

She makes me fat. I only realise the extent of how much I’ve fallen when I would come back to Singapore after a summer in Chongqing, and live on 1-2 meals per day because living with her has made me intolerant of takeaway food. I think of her as an epiphany under the guise of an innocent face; I think of her as my legal right to grow fat and horizontal as enshrined by the Rights of…

On surviving a car accident near Chongqing

The GSK of my body has never produced more oxytocin for anyone else. I know that the adrenaline was bound to get taken off the shelf once it’s had its run with every batch, because that’s what it…

Day #1

Between present-bias and getting so far-sighted that you lose sight of the moment-to-moment, we also have to deal with the diversification heuristic as applied to romance. I was studying for my Behavioural Economics and reading about a group of kids whom, when asked to choose candies sequentially, always choose the candy that they prefer; but when asked to choose simultaneously all the candies they’re gonna receive at 2 different homes all-at-once, opts for variety instead….

The official and the alternative story of Singapore’s HDB project

Most Singaporean students are familiar with Social Studies. For me, it’s one of those subjects that I simply happen to be better in because 1) I like stories and 2) It’s wordplay. We learnt about the need to assess sources for their credibility, but it never crossed my mind that the text itself could be (indeed, *should* be) subject to the same treatment. Education in Singapore (until the pre-tertiary level mostly, university is another bag…

Housing price in the world’s largest and possibly hottest city

Hottest for its girls, hotpot and yikes – weather in summer. As supported by a Chinese saying that goes something like: Upon arriving in Chongqing, celebrate if you’re single and beat your chest out with regret if you got married before this, as testimony to Chongqing’s reputation for having the most beautiful girls in China. Another piece of evidence comes from the Chinese people’s own searches: Source: http://www.foreignpolicy.com/articles/2014/03/04/a_map_of_china_by_stereotype This map presents only the top query…
